kindle paperwhite amazon 2015 – major changes

As usual, the updated device is called “all-new” but there are in fact only two major changes.

300 ppi high-resolution screen

The major improvement is the new display with a higher resolution. At 300 ppi (pixels per inch), it offers twice as many pixels as the earlier Kindle Paperwhite (212 ppi).
Click or tap on the image below to see how crisp are the letters on the screen.
Kindle Paperwhite 2015 features high-definition 300 ppi screen
It’s the same screen as in the top-end Kindle Voyage, with a resolution of 1440 x 1080, comparable to that in Kobo Glo HD (1448 x 1072).
Unlike in Kindle Voyage, the 2015 Kindle Paperwhite screen doesn’t have PagePress, a force sensor that reacts to a subtle increase of pressure. Also, it’s not equipped with Adaptive Light Sensor that Kindle Voyage has.
The specification of the display, along with the dimensions and shape of the Kindle Paperwhite 2015 are presented in the picture below.

The remaining features are basically the same. The dimensions haven’t changed, so you can use the same cover you’ve got on your current Kindle Paperwhite.
The weight, despite the change of the entire screen panel, has changed only by one gram.

Kindle Paperwhite 2015 – reviews

Here are the most valuable excerpts from first reviews the device received in the beginning of July 2015.

Forget your iPad, the new $120 high-resolution Kindle is what you need for the beach.

It looks closer to a real paper book than anything else out there.
–Joanna Stern, The Wall Street Journal / ⇢ Read the review

I’ve owned the previous Paperwhite since day one, and the new version is an immediate and noticeable improvement.

Given the choice between the basic $80 Kindle, the $120 Paperwhite, and the $200 Voyage, the Paperwhite is the obvious choice. Not too hot, not too cold. Just right.
–Mario Aguilar, Gizmodo / ⇢ Read the review

The resolution upgrade is noticeable, but it’s not enough of a difference to make you want to ditch your second-generaton Paperwhite, which has an updated lighting engine.

–David Carnoy, CNET / ⇢ Read the review

The Kindle Paperwhite is the best e-reader for most people by a wide margin.

Unless you are incredibly finicky about the technology of your e-reader, there’s just not much reason to spend the extra $80 to get the Voyage.
–Dieter Bohn, The Verge / ⇢ Read the review

The new Kindle Paperwhite is Amazon’s best yet. Its light, easy to hold and use, while the screen one of the crispest e-paper screens I have seen. It makes reading a pleasure and I read for longer than I would normally.

A high-definition screen immediately makes the new Kindle Paperwhite a direct competitor of Kobo Glo HD and Kindle Voyage.
Below, you’ll find major features compared. It should help you decide whether paying extra dollars for the Voyage is still a reasonable decision. And whether switching to Kobo for the affordable HD reading experience still makes sense.

No glare in bright sunlight
Unlike reflective tablet and smartphone screens, Kindle Paperwhite reads like paper. Show me
Read comfortably with one hand
Lighter than a paperback, comfortably hold Kindle Paperwhite in one hand for those times when you can’t put the book down.
Charge monthly, not daily
Kindle Paperwhite won’t leave you tethered to an outlet. A single charge can last up to six weeks (based on a half hour of reading per day with wireless turned off and the light setting at ten).
Won’t tire your eyes in the dark
Kindle Paperwhite guides light toward the surface of the display with its built-in front light—unlike back-lit tablets that shine in your eyes—so you can read comfortably for hours without eyestrain. Adjust your screen’s brightness for great reading in any light.
Next-generation reading experience
The all-new Kindle Paperwhite now offers Bookerly, an exclusive font crafted from the ground up for reading on digital screens. Warm and contemporary, Bookerly is inspired by the artistry of the best fonts in modern print books, but is hand-crafted for great readability at any font size.
Lose yourself in a book
By design, Kindle Paperwhite is purpose-built for reading and creates a sanctuary so you can lose yourself in a book. Unlike tablets and phones, Kindle doesn’t distract you with social media, emails, and text messages.
